The Shenandoah Community Foundation announced it has awarded $$47,250 to area non-profit organizations. The grants were made possible by a generous gift from Woodstock Anonymous.
The following organizations received grants:
American Red Cross Top of Virginia Chapter $2,000 Priority addressed: Civic Affairs Requesting grant to support their Disaster Services – Preparedness, Response & Recovery program. This program assists families with shelter, food, clothing, medication, and personal items after a disaster such as a fire. |
Apple Valley Mediation $1,000 Priority addressed: Education and Health AVMN provides dispute resolution in the Northern Shenandoah County. The grant request is to fund their Restorative Justice Program which allows victims & offenders to resolve issues and to fund Co-parenting classes to help parents who are sharing custody improve parenting skills. |
Blue & Gray Rescue Dogs $3,000 Priority addressed: Civic Affairs Blue & Gray Rescue Dogs, Inc, is an air scent wilderness dog team that is available 24 hours a day,7 days a week to search for missing persons. Request is to purchase 7 new GPS Dog tracking systems. |
Healthy Families $3000 Priority addressed: Family, Child, & Social Welfare Healthy Families provides education and support to improve health, safety and parent-child relationships. Grant would pay expenses to provide home visiting services, transportation, support, and advocacy for families to improve their lives and future for their children. Grant would pay for 75 home visits and transportation expenses for 4-6 families during the upcoming year. |
Help With Housing $6,000 Priority addressed: Family, Child, & Social Welfare A regional non-profit housing organization serving Clarke, Warren, Shenandoah and Frederick Counties and the City of Winchester. They make emergency home repairs for low-income homeowners, many of whom are elderly, disabled or both. Grant will fund critical home repairs needed in Shenandoah County. |
Humane Society of Shenandoah County $1,000 Priority addressed: Civic Affairs Since 2005 when the HSSC started their spay and neuter program, there has been a steady decline in intake and euthanasia at the animal shelter but there is still a 51% euthanasia rate. Grant would continue the program to spay and rabies vaccinate 50 female cats and neuter and vaccinate 50 male cats. |
Mt. Olive and Shiloh UMC Enrich Program $4,000 Priority addressed: Family, Child & Social Welfare Community support program for children at risk. Grant will support next summer’s program that provides two meals a day, physical exercise, math and reading practice and community involvement for at risk children during the summer. |
Response $4,000 Priority addressed: Family, Child & Social Welfare Grant is to assist clients with transportation needs such as transportation to job interviews, doctor’s appointments, and to hire a part-time staff member to work days on the weekends (4 hours each day). They are receiving more requests for shelter on the weekends and people requesting to drop off donations. |
Shenandoah Alliance for Shelter $3,500 Priority addressed: Family, Child & Social Welfare An organization committed to preventing homelessness and/or shelter homeless families, to transition them back to permanent housing. Grant request is to develop, educate, and support a strong landlord network to create more affordable housing units in Shenandoah County. |
Shenandoah County Dental Clinic $7,500 Priority addressed: Family, Child, & Social Welfare The grant would provide dental care to 100 uninsured/indigent adults. Funds will cover provider services and supplies. |
Shenandoah County Tourism $500 Priority addressed: Arts & Culture Would promote the O Shenandoah County Artisan Trail Spring Event which is held in partnership with Artisan Center of Virginia. The purpose of the event is to educate the public on the importance of local products and increase awareness of the process by which such products are made or grown. |
Shenandoah Forum $2,000 Priority addressed: Civic Affairs To help produce a local food and comprehensive farm guide and mobile app for Shenandoah County. |
Shenandoah County Historical Society $1,500 Priority addressed: Civic Affairs Grant money to be used for the discovery, protection, and exhibition of historic Civil War era graffiti found in the 1795 Shenandoah County Historic Courthouse in Woodstock. The rehabilitation is already underway and the Historical Society will occupy the building when the work is complete. |
Shenandoah Valley Lutheran Ministries $4,000 Priority addressed: Family, Child, & Social Welfare Grant would be support for the Luke’s Backpack program which provides backpacks that contain meals and snacks for needy kids to use over the weekend when they don’t have access to the free or reduced lunch that the schools provide. The backpacks are sent home filled each weekend and the children return them to school the next week to be refilled. |
Shenandoah Valley Music Festival $1,250 Priority addressed: Arts & Culture Grant request is to defray the costs of 2 family music programs that would be free to the public. |
Skyline Community Action Partnership $1,500 Priority addressed: Family, Child, & Social Welfare A designated community action agency that provides free preschool and family services to households living below the poverty level. Grant will purchase furniture for the Head Start classrooms located in Woodstock, VA. |
Theatre Shenandoah $1,500 Priority addressed: Arts & Culture Theatre Shenandoah is a community theatre located in Edinburg, Virginia. Their mission is to provide a high quality theater experience to participants and the Shenandoah valley populace. The grant will be used to improve the technical lighting system to support equipment donated by Wayside Theatre. |
