Types of Funds

The Shenandoah Community Foundation administers a number of different funds, each providing the donor with different mechanisms and frameworks for meeting their goals.

Donor-Advised Funds

Individuals, families, and businesses may create a donor-advised fund. With this type of fund, the fund advisor recommends grants to charitable organizations or projects.

Field-of-Interest Funds

With this type of fund assets are distributed for a general topic area such as youth, education, conservation, arts, emergency services, or others. With field-of-interest funds, the Foundation Board makes grants from each fund to meet community needs within the specified field of interest. Current field of interest funds at the Foundation include:

  • Art Group Education Fund
  • Bowman-Shannon Cultural Arts Fund
  • Career and Technical Education Fund
  • Endowment for Environmental Conservation Fund

Restricted and Agency Funds

These are designated funds that are given to the Foundation with the request that grants be made to a specific named charity or charities. An Agency Fund may be established by a nonprofit organization to provide a stream of revenue and assure its long-term fiscal health.

Scholarship Funds

This fund would be for the benefit of individuals to be used to further their education, such as at a college, university, or trade school. You may specify certain criteria for qualified recipients. View Scholarships

Unrestricted Funds

This type of fund are undesignated funds that can be used for any purpose that aligns with the Foundation’s goals. These funds provide flexibility, allowing the Foundation to respond changing and emerging needs.

Bequest Funds

These funds enable donors to carry out their charitable legacy beyond their lifetime through a planned gift or by designating their charitable fund as an estate beneficiary.
