It is with a heavy heart that we say farewell to Doug Arthur—Shenandoah County attorney, Vietnam veteran, musician, sports enthusiast, and true lover of people and community— who has lent his name, reputation, and support to the Shenandoah Community Foundation as a member of our Advisory Committee since it was first formed. A native of Strasburg, Doug was the quintessential good guy—always greeting others with a smile, a hug, or a handshake, and always practicing the “glass half full” approach to life, even when it threw him curves, as it did in his recent bout with cancer. Until the very end, we saw evidence of his thoughtfulness to others and love of family and community shining through his own concerns and challenges.
I was proud to have known Doug, worked with him, and called him my friend. What better tribute can we pay to such a wonderful man than to pick up his mantle of kindness, generosity, and commitment to community service and the higher good? I challenge myself—and you—to do just that.
The family has suggested that expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions to the Strasburg Community Library, 195 W. King St., Strasburg, VA 22657 or Shenandoah Education Foundation, P.O. Box 607, Woodstock, VA 22664 or other charitable organizations of your choice. If you’d like the Shenandoah Community Foundation to help guide you in selecting a worthy tribute to Doug, let us know.
